MapData Services put street sweepers on track30/08/2012
The starting point
The City of West Torrens (CWT) in South Australia was faced with a lack of reliable reporting capabilities for their fleet of street sweepers.
Legacy systems, a lack of real-time reporting and technology failures were making it increasingly difficult for CWT to monitor fuel efficiency, mileage, operational locations and the regularity of fleet cleaning.
CWT approached MapData Services in 2010 to develop a fully operational and reliable live tracking system to manage its sweeper fleet. We collaborated with Esri Australia to integrate GPS data from MapData Services’ FleetLocate tracking system into CWT’s GIS technology (utilising ArcGIS).
FleetLocate geographically tracks where vehicles and assets are located, and their status. For CWT, FleetLocate separately monitors the street sweepers’: left, right, and centre brooms; the left and right vacuum; and the auxiliary motor. Tracking data is then formatted to meet CWT’s specific requirements. Access to information is provided through an online portal and integrated into CWT’s GIS technology.
The bottom line
Since implementing FleetLocate, CWT can now accurately monitor and confidently report on all street sweeper activities. Enhanced real-time and historical reporting (including 30 standard reports plus customisable reports on cleaning systems in operation) has improved the council’s service to the community. Precise monitoring of journey lengths and reporting on travel history has enabled CWT to document service intervals, while the real-time locator has increased staff safety and fleet security.
CWT has also been able to measure the efficiencies generated through the tracking system, such as reduced fuel consumption, improved carbon emissions control and increased productivity.
